The best way to prepare for math contests such as AIME
Proper
AIME prep online will ensure you prepare properly for your contest. However,
before you start the preparation process, you should know some of the best ways
to prepare for math competitions. Preparing for your math contests is not like
preparing for school math exams. You’ll never see the same problem repeated.
This
means that in school math, you can see a problem repeated and when this
happens, you need to know how to deal with the problem. For example in school
math, you will see a problem like 4 + 5= _.
This
does not happen in a competition because in a competition you will see
something like, “what number can be added to 4 to attain 9?”
These
two problems are the same but one is more challenging. This means that during
your AIME
preparation, you should expect to see more challenging problems and not
the usual straightforward problems. Competition math is made to trick and stump
people whilst school math is meant to help people understand the material.
This
means that if you want to prepare properly for your math contests, you should
understand the logic and not just cram things like a primary school child.
Here
is an example of a problem that does not require math but just logic.
“One
bag has 10 white socks, 12 blue socks, 2 pink socks, and 3 green socks. How
many socks should I pull to get a matching pair?”
Since
you have to be guaranteed to get a matching pair, you should think of the worst
scenario possible and get rid of it to enable the other scenarios to work. This
means that the worst scenario will be choosing 1 sock of each color.
You
would have 1 white, 1 blue, 1 pink, and 1 green. If you choose more then you
will have a pair of one of the colors and this will satisfy the condition. It
means that the answer is 5. During your AIME prep online, you should learn
to solve such problems that involve a lot of logic.
