Effective tips on how to study for the Math Olympiad

Taking an AMC course is a great way of representing your country at the international math Olympiad. Are you a strong mathematics student who is wondering what types of opportunities are outside the classroom? Read this blog post to know how to study for the math Olympiad.

Take the AMC 10 or the AMC 12

These two tests are nationwide tests. They qualify you for the AIME. Only students with top scores are normally invited to take the AIME. You can take the AMC or/and the AMC 12 multiple times. It is important to understand that AMC 12 and AMC 10 have 25 questions.

Students have 75 minutes for the whole exam and each correct answer gives you 6 points and every unanswered question is worth 1.5 points. You do not get any deduction for wrong answers.

During your AMC training, it is important to know that you do not need to get all the questions right to acquire a qualifying score. All you have to do is to do better than most students taking the exam. You should keep that in mind when coming up with a strategy for the test.

For you to qualify, you will need to be in the top 5 percent of scores on the AMC 12. For AMC 10, you need to be in the top 2.5 percent of the scores. But, if you qualify, you can take the AIME.

Taking the AIME

After your AMC course, you can go ahead and take the AIME. This is a 15-question exam that takes three hours. Regardless of whether you took the AMC 12 or AMC 10, everyone will take the same AIME. It is offered once a year in the spring. You can only take the AIME exam once per qualification. This means that while you can take the AMC 12 or AMC 10 multiple times to qualify, after qualifying, you have only one shot at the AIME.
