Effective tips to help you prepare for AIME
AIME
prep is
very easy if you know how to go about it. The best way to prepare is to do a
lot of practice and learn the materials necessary to help you solve problems.
There are a lot of books and online lectures/handouts you can use to improve
your skills in problem-solving.
Depending
on your abilities, you should start with different books, practice problems and
different areas of the forums. It is also important to try to strengthen in the
areas you are weak at. Read on to learn how to get started.
Books
You
can begin by using the art of problem-solving books as they are an excellent
resource for preparation. They cover a wide range of topics, from number theory
to algebra to combinatorics and more.
You
should also use AoPS textbooks if you want to learn how to break down specific
mathematics areas during your AIME preparation. These books are
on three levels. The first level is introductory, the second level is
intermediate while the third level is advanced.
Practice
problems
There
are a lot of websites online where you can find old practice problems plus
solutions. You can also find a lot of practice problems on forums.
The
AIME cutoff has ranged from 84 to 96 in recent years. To get a score in this
range, a simple way is to answer thirteen questions right and leave the rest
blank which will help you earn a score of 96. Cutoffs have been approximately
100.5 in the past but it is rare as contests are getting harder each year.
This
means that since the first ten questions should be solved by almost anyone, they
are sixty free points. During your AIME prep, it is important to
understand that throughout questions 10 to 20, it is enough to answer 3-5
questions.
